WARNING:
Due to a few people who are offended by this activity, I decided to
temporarily rename it to
Horde vs. Alliance.
Understand that I did not invent this game, but as it
is a very old and traditional game, I have played it and shared it here.
The argument is that this game portrays the Indians in a negative light
and with stereotypical overtones. Personally, I do not see this at
all especially since
both teams
take turns sneaking up on and then being
discovered by the opposing team, only to be chased back home. If it
were just the Indians sneaking up on the cowboys, I would understand, but
in this case both teams take turns being the "bad guys", so to speak.
I also did a lot of research, due to the complaints, and found that the
term Indians, is still a wide accepted term, so Hopefully that is not the
offense here.
In conclusion, since I do not
want dead links in my site, I personally do not see the offensive
stereotype, and because this is an older game, I have left this link
alive.
If you would like to weigh in on
this subject, please feel free to e-mail. However, do not send me
non-sense threatening e-mails, I am just a dag nabbed school teacher
trying to share ideas with others, and providing this site free of charge.
It would be nice if that would be kept in mind when writing. :)
NAME OF ACTIVITY: Cowboys
and Indians
GRADE LEVEL: Grade
k-3
EQUIPMENT: None
HIGHLIGHTS:
Safety in large group running, dodging, tagging and acting on
verbal cues
INSTRUCTIONS:
Divide the class into two teams, one team being the cowboys and the
other team being the Indians. To
begin teams are lined up at opposite ends of the playing area.
Start by having the cowboys facing away from the Indians.
At this point the Indians sneak up on the cowboys.
When the teacher thinks they are close enough he shouts "here
come the Indians", the cowboys then turn around and chase the Indians
back home. Any
Indians tagged become cowboys. This
time the Indians turn around, and the cowboys sneak up to the Indians.,
when the cowboys get close enough, the teacher warns the Indians "Here
come the Cowboys", the Indians then turn and chase the cowboys back home.
This game may be played with a time limit or until all players are
on one team.
HELPFUL
HINTS:
Stress the safety in tagging others, pushing, diving, and obstacles in the
playing area. To settle arguments over tags flags may be used.
